Beat Energy AnglicareSA Partnership

Adelaide’s Community Housing Tenants to Reap Benefits as Smart Solar Energy Becomes Accessible

A new pilot project in partnership with Beat EnergyTM and AnglicareSA is enabling South Australians on low incomes to access smart rooftop solar energy for the first time.

Energy affordability is a pressing issue for low-income Australian householders and to address this, Beat Energy™ has joined hands with AnglicareSA to install Smart Solar systems, helping low-income community housing tenants access cheaper energy via Smart Solar systems. The $260,000 project aims to develop affordable solutions for low-income tenants to benefit from solar energy and reduce their cost of living and carbon footprint. In the initial phase, 37 low-income households are making the most of solar-powered community housing and will be able to save up to 20 % on their energy costs through this initiative.

At Beat Energy™, we believe that sustainable energy should be accessible and affordable for all. We are committed to helping our customers navigate through a dynamic energy market and with our products we aim to meet the growing clean energy demand. As the developers of breakthrough energy solutions, we are confident that our energy management and control innovations will provide the benefits of reliable, affordable and renewable energy to all Australians.

Breaking Barriers to Accessing Affordable Renewable Energy

Access to solar energy has become fundamental for households to reduce their energy costs and improve energy affordability. Although many homeowners are opting for solar energy, solar has typically not been available to all householders, especially to a vast number of Australian tenants. This initiative aims to implement feasible and practical solutions for low-income tenants to access solar energy that can be scaled across regional and metropolitan Australia.

AnglicareSA is one of the largest providers of community housing in SA. Anglicare SA Executive General Manager Housing, Michelle Gegenhuber, said, "The solar systems are paid for, maintained and owned by Anglicare SA, leaving tenants with no installation expenses. All South Australians, especially those on low incomes, deserve access to technology and services that reduce their cost of living. With no out-of-pocket expenses for tenants, the new initiative will not only help reduce bills, but contribute positively to the environment, and educate our tenants to better understand and control how and when to use energy throughout the day. As we work towards our vital goal of increasing the supply of social and affordable housing, we are committed to ensuring that we’re developing sustainable homes suitable for the long term. We are proud to be working with a South Australian family business, using locally-developed technology to achieve the best energy solutions for our tenants.”

Together with this partnership, Beat Energy™ and Anglicare SA aim at solar adoption while reducing financial stress as the tenants can relax and feel more comfortable running appliances while not worrying about high energy bills.

Anglicare SA tenants John and Beverley are looking forward to reaping the financial benefits of the new solar system. The couple rely on the aged care pension and are grateful to have access to renewable energy – an opportunity they always thought was financially out of reach. “It’s great so far – being able to track how and when we use energy so we can keep the cost of the power down,” John said. "We often thought about solar, but since retirement haven’t had the funds to do so.”

Beat Energy™ co-founder and CEO Domenico Gelonese said, “Twenty-five per cent of all Australian householders are tenants and unfortunately the majority have been left out of the renewable energy market, while their energy costs continue to market while. We are putting an end to that and making solar available to all Australians, especially those who need it most.”

Following the pilot project, Anglicare SA will be exploring renewable energy options across its social and affordable housing portfolio.
